Light Installation for Matraville Homes
Light installation across Matraville, from a single dead batten to a whole-house LED changeover, quoted in writing before we start and tested before we sign off. Call (02) 9134 9026 or book through our contact page.
Signs You Need Light Installation
Lighting problems creep up slowly, so most people put up with them far longer than they need to. These are the ones we get called for.
- Halogen downlights that heat the room up and cost a fortune to run
- A fitting that flickers or buzzes even after you have changed the globe
- Yellowed, brittle diffusers that crack the moment you touch them
- Rooms where you are working in your own shadow at the bench
- Outdoor fittings that have rusted open or filled with water
- Globes in one particular fitting that keep failing early

Light Installation: What We Actually Do
No trade gets underestimated quite like this one. Here is what the work actually involves.
Downlight Installation and Replacement
We swap old halogens for LED, or cut in new downlights and lay out the spacing so the light lands where you use the room, not in a grid.
LED Upgrades and Dimming
Old dimmers and LEDs argue with each other. We match a Clipsal dimmer to the driver so you get a smooth range instead of buzzing and flicker at the bottom.
Pendants, Battens and Feature Lights
Kitchen pendants, wardrobe lights, stair and hallway fittings, all mounted to something structural rather than to a sheet of plasterboard and hope.
Outdoor and Security Lighting
Sensor floods, path and garden circuits, all in gear rated to sit outside and sealed properly, rather than an indoor fitting shoved under an eave.
The Fittings Themselves
Our default range is SAL and Beacon Lighting. Turned up with your own boxes from a sale? We are glad to put those in instead.
What Affects the Cost of Light Installation
Lighting quotes swing more than people expect, and hardly any of that swing is the fitting itself. The real drivers are these.
- Whether we can get above the ceiling. This is the single biggest factor, and it is decided by your building, not by us.
- How many new positions. Replacing an existing fitting is quick. A new position needs a cable run, and that is where the hours go.
- Switching changes. A new switch, or moving from one switch to two-way, means cable in the wall as well as the ceiling.
- The fittings themselves. Budget LEDs and quality dimmable fittings are different money, and we will price both if you want to compare.
- What the old wiring is like. If we open a ceiling rose and find brittle insulation, that circuit needs sorting before anything new goes on it.
You get a free written quote on site, with a fixed price in writing and no call-out fee for the visit. The price is agreed before any work starts.

What We See in Matraville Homes
Matraville is not one kind of housing, and lighting is where that shows up hardest. Detached cottages, semis and unit blocks all sit within a few streets of each other.
Above a cottage ceiling there is usually a roof cavity. We can get up there, run a cable to a new position, and you would never know we had been.
Over a flat, what you have overhead is concrete slab. Nothing to crawl through, nothing to thread a cable along, and no chance of a downlight anywhere the old fitting was not already.
So in a flat the same brief turns into surface-mounted fittings, track, or a channel chased into the wall and made good afterwards.
It is the same request and a completely different job. That is why we would rather look at the ceiling before quoting than guess from a photo.

Compliance, Certificates and NSW Requirements
Lighting sits under the same rules as the rest of your wiring, even when the job looks like a five-minute swap.
The work is done to the AS/NZS 3000 wiring rules. Those rules cover the boring but important parts of a lighting job: how a fitting is supported, how the connections are made, and what clearance a recessed light needs from insulation and timber.
That clearance matters more than anything else on this page. Old halogens ran hot enough to char a rafter, and insulation pushed back over them is a genuine fire risk we still find.
Where the job is notifiable electrical work you get a Certificate of Compliance for the circuit. DIY electrical work is illegal in NSW, and swapping a fitting yourself is the most common way people forget that.

Our Light Installation Process, Start to Finish
- Up into the ceiling first. Whatever sits above your plasterboard decides the whole job, so we check it before pricing rather than afterwards. Your free written quote comes from what we found up there.
- Settle the layout on paper. Where every light lands, what switches it, which fitting goes in. Moving things at this stage costs nothing.
- Install day. Drop sheets down and the place left tidy, circuit isolated, every fitting mounted to something solid and terminated properly.
- Prove it, then hand it back. Circuits and safety switches tested before we sign off, dimmers dialled in, certificate issued where the job calls for one.

Why This Is a Job for Our Team
Lighting is judged by eye, every day, by you. Spacing that is fifty millimetres out or a dimmer that hums is something you will notice for years.
We are a Master Electricians Australia member, which is a standards body rather than a directory, and we work to their code on every job.
A good share of these jobs turn into a second and a third one at the same address. Nobody invites you back if the first room looked wrong.

Servicing Nearby Homes Too
Lighting rarely travels alone. Adding circuits usually sends us to the switchboard first, and a lot of these jobs are booked as one slice of broader residential electrical work. Mid-renovation, our level 2 electrician page covers the supply side.
Maroubra and Malabar sit on our regular run, we light up plenty of Matraville, and Kingsford is on the service list too.

Common questions
Matraville Light Installation FAQs
The questions that come up on nearly every lighting quote, answered without the jargon.
Do I get paperwork showing the work is compliant?
Yes. Anything notifiable gets a Certificate of Compliance in your name. Even on a simple swap we test the circuit afterwards and tell you what we found.
Do you handle strata or apartment light installation in Matraville?
We do. Inside your own flat is normally fine to book directly. Work in a lobby, stairwell or carpark belongs to the owners corporation, so the strata manager has to authorise it.
What guarantee do you give on light installation?
Two things. A lifetime workmanship guarantee on how it was installed, plus a 12-month product warranty we add over the top of the manufacturer's own cover.
Can light installation be booked for a Saturday in Matraville?
We book weekdays only, between 7am and 5pm. Our weekend cover exists for genuine emergencies, and putting lights in is not one of those, however keen you are.
What do you need from me on the day?
Somewhere to stand a ladder, and your mind made up on positions. Bought your own fittings? Unpack them beforehand so we can look them over first.
How long does light installation take?
Half a dozen downlights with a roof cavity above them is generally a morning. Whole-house jobs, and slab ceilings, stretch out to a day or beyond.
